A Celebration of Saskatchewan’s Lung Health Leaders
The Lung Association of Saskatchewan celebrated their 2015 awards luncheon on Friday, April 17, 2015 in Saskatoon. The luncheon was emceed by Simon Hyatt from Shaw TV and recognized 27 leaders who have contributed significantly to supporting lung health in the province. Three staff members were also acknowledged for their years of service. Over 100 people were in attendance including His Worship Mayor Don Atchison who brought greetings on behalf of the City of Saskatoon. Lung Ambassador, former Saskatchewan Roughrider and CFL Hall of Famer, Don Narcisse was the Lung Association’s special guest who spoke about what it was like to grow up and play professional football after being diagnosed with asthma at the age of nine. He contributed much of his success to support from his family, especially his mother, proper asthma treatment and hard work.
Life Membership Award - Pat Smith
The Lung Association’s volunteer Chair of the Board of Directors received a Life Membership award. Pat Smith has been a long-time supporter of the Lung Association and has undertaken many diverse volunteer projects. Pat is a pharmacist and Certified Respiratory Educator in Regina. Throughout her career, Pat has received numerous awards recognizing her outstanding work in pharmacy and in the community. She is described by the staff as very conscientious and professional while at the same time friendly and engaging.
Award of Merit - Brent Kitchen
Brent Kitchen is a Respiratory Therapist and a member of The Lung Association’s Board of Directors. He is also the co-chair for the Board of the new Lung Health Institute of Canada. Brent was given an Award of Merit in grateful recognition of outstanding service in the fight against lung disease. Brent is an influential voice on the board with his experience in lung health, risk management and improving the quality of care. His problem solving and critical thinking skills are an asset in all the roles he has served including his work with The Lung Association.

(Stamp Out Asthma Raffle Ambassadors) - For courageously sharing their story about the tragic loss of their wonderful son Emerson who died of an asthma attack at the age of two. Their work has helped raise funds for asthma research, programming and has gained awareness about this common yet serious lung disease.
Saskatchewan Asbestos Disease Awareness Group
For their contribution toward Bill 604 - Howard’s Law, a law that ensures Saskatchewan has a mandatory registry of public buildings that contained asbestos.
City of Martensville and City of Warman
For emphasising family wellness by adopting an outdoor smoke-free bylaw that includes smoke-free parks, playgrounds, patios and sports fields.
Saskatoon Blades
(Kolton Dixon, Sam McKechnie, Alex Moodie, Isaac Schacher, Brett Stovin and Nick Zajac) - For empowering youth to be tobacco-free through numerous school presentations.
Janice Burgess
For her significant contribution towards tobacco-free initiatives in Saskatchewan through the Partnership to Assist in Cessation of Tobacco (PACT) program.
Jackie Lindsay
For her volunteer work in the area of radon – the second leading cause of lung cancer.
Dan Reid
For contributing limited edition art to our Artworks for Lung Health Campaigns since 2008.
Bill Barrable & Sheelagh Ferguson Barrable
For their success in their publication and selling of The Wood Fairies Christmas Deed storybook written by the late Dr. Ferguson. Dr. Ferguson was a pioneer in North America’s fight against tuberculosis and the introduction of free tuberculosis treatment. Bill and Sheelagh are generously sharing a portion of the book sales with The Lung Association.

For his involvement in promoting lung health in youth across the province.
