Treatment
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are the recommended treatment for pertussis. If started early, it can help reduce how severe and how long the infection lasts. It can also decrease the risk of complications, especially in infants. If diagnosed early on, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics such as azithromycin, clarithromycin, or erythromycin. Because pertussis is so contagious your doctor will likely suggest that everyone in the household is treated with antibiotics. Always follow the directions for antibiotics exactly as prescribed.
Over-the-counter medications
Cough medicines are strongly discouraged and have not been shown to help pertussis. Due to potential side effects, cough medicines are never recommended for children under age 6.
Rest & hydrate
During recovery, it’s important to rest and drink plenty of fluids. Children with pertussis may vomit or not eat or drink much because of the coughing. Offer smaller, more frequent meals and encourage your child to drink lots of fluids.
