Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehabilitation (pulmonary rehab) is a program with therapies that include but are not limited to, exercise training, education, and behavior change; each designed to improve the physical and mental health of people with lung disease. Pulmonary rehab is recommended for many types of lung diseases such as COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, and those on a lung transplant journey.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Benefits

Pulmonary rehabilitation helps;

• reduce symptoms
• reduce hospitalization
• reduce unscheduled healthcare visits
• reduce leg discomfort
• allow you to do more activities of daily living
• increase strength
• increase knowledge to manage your lung disease
• improve your emotional health, and
• improve your quality of life.

Types of Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs

Pulmonary rehabilitation programs can be delivered:

1. Virtual: Virtual pulmonary rehabilitation programs offer online exercise and education by trained healthcare professionals. They are accessible from anywhere at any time.
2. In-person: In-person pulmonary rehabilitation programs offer supervised exercise and education by trained healthcare professionals.  They provide a supportive encouraging environment and the opportunity for you to meet other people living with lung disease.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Costs and Support

• There may be costs associated with participation in these services. Please contact the provider directly for more information.
• Lung Saskatchewan’s Caring Breaths Financial Assistance Program may be able to reimburse costs associated with pulmonary rehabilitation home-based equipment and enrollment fees.  Find out more at www.CaringBreaths.ca
