Pulmonary embolism (PE) happens when one or more arteries in the lungs is blocked by a blood clot, tumour or fat. The majority of PEs are from clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis or DVTs) and many get better on their own.  However, a PE can sometimes be life threatening.
