Prevention

Vaccination is your best defense against the flu!

The influenza vaccine or 'flu shot' is one of the best defenses against the flu. The flu shot is recommended annually for those 6 months and older and is especially important for people at high-risk of influenza complications including:

  • seniors;
  • people with underlying health conditions or compromised immune systems;
  • children;
  • pregnant women; and
  • caregivers and contacts of people at high risk.

Wash your hands properly and often!

Another important thing you can do to prevent the spread of the flu virus is to wash your hands.

How to wash your hands:

  • Remove any jewelry
  • Wet your hands with warm water
  • Apply soap
  • Scrub with soap all over your hands and under nails for 20 seconds (as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday)
  • Rinse your hands for 10 seconds under warm water
  • Dry your hands completely with a paper towel
  • Turn the tap off with a paper towel to avoid getting your hands dirty again

When to wash your hands:

  • Before you eat or prepare food
  • After you use the bathroom or change diapers
  • After you blow you nose, sneeze or cough into your sleeve
  • Before and after taking care of someone who is sick

Protect others!

Stay home if you are experiencing flu symptoms.

Wear a mask!

Wearing a mask in crowded spaces during flu season can help prevent the spread of flu and other viruses. If you have to seek medical attention, ensure you are wearing a mask when leaving your home.
