Cytisine

Why is it prescribed?

Cytisine is a natural health product indicated for use in smoking cessation.

The most common side effects:

  • gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and constipation
  • headache
  • abnormal dreams

Other possible side effects:

  • increased appetite
  • dry mouth
  • irritability
  • increased heart rate

 


Cytisine works by reducing the urge to smoke.  It attaches to some of the same nerve receptors in the brain as nicotine. This leads to fewer nicotine withdrawal symptoms and lessens the feeling of satisfaction from nicotine.


Do not take cytisine if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or atherosclerosis.

Check with your healthcare provider if you have high blood pressure or any heart conditions before use.

Drug Interactions:

  • varenicline - similar activity
  • antiseizure medications - may decrease effectiveness

Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding: not recommended.
