Our guest presenter Dr. Satchan Takaya, MD, FRCPC:
Dr. Takaya is an Infection Disease Specialist and Clinical Associate Professor Division Head (Acting) Infectious Diseases, at The University of Saskatchewan. Her roles have included being the Saskatoon Pandemic Chief of Staff, Physician Lead in Covid-19 Early Therapeutics with SHA, Physician co-lead, Covid-19 Vaccine with IHICC Saskatoon.
Born in Japan but raised in Saskatoon, Dr. Takaya completed medical school and Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Saskatchewan. After her chief resident year in 1994, she moved to Vancouver to complete her Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of British Columbia. After working briefly in Edmonton at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, she settled back in Saskatoon in 2005 and has been practicing here since. Most of my time she is at St Paul’s Hospital, but she balances this with an outpatient practice in all things infectious, including HIV, viral hepatitis, and surgical infections.
Our guest presenter Dr. Jasmine Hasselback, MD, MPH, FRCPC:
Dr. Jasmine Hasselback is a Public Health and Preventative Medicine specialist in Saskatoon. Her work is focused on preventing disease and injury, and in promoting health and well-being. Her work often includes partnerships with many non-healthcare related programs, services, and organizations because she knows that although her job is to keep people from getting sick, the “sickcare” system holds very few of the levers to make that happen.
Dr. Hasselback completed her studies at the Universities of Ottawa and Saskatchewan, and has worked in various settings, including both rural and remote, and large metropolitan. Although her practice has been extremely varied, of note she has supported the development of safer policies at the local level with the legalization of cannabis, she has engaged in intersectoral partnerships to develop better early childhood development services and supports and has been fully immersed in containing communicable disease threats including responding to large scale outbreaks.
