What’s In Their Backpack? Keeping Lung Health Top of Mind This Back-to-School Season

Submitted by bstadnichuk on 20 August 2026

Back-to-school season is here, and along with new routines, school supplies and packed lunches, there are a few other things families may want to add to their list. Lung Saskatchewan President & CEO Erin Kuan recently joined CTV Your Morning Saskatchewan to talk about keeping lung health top of mind as children and youth head back to school.

For children living with asthma, back-to-school preparation can begin before the first bell rings.

Every September, asthma flare-ups increase as children return to school. Respiratory viruses, fall allergens and changes in routines can all make asthma more difficult to control.

August is a good time for parents and caregivers to get their child's asthma routine back on track. Refill prescriptions, check medication expiry dates, ensure controller medication is being taken as prescribed and review your child's Asthma Action Plan.

It's also important to share an up-to-date Asthma Action Plan with the appropriate people at school, like teachers and coaches, so they know your child's asthma triggers, symptoms and what to do if symptoms worsen.

Back to school can also be an important time to talk with young people about vaping. Youth may encounter vaping at school or in their social circles, and vaping devices aren't always easy for parents and caregivers to recognize. Open, judgement-free conversations can give young people space to ask questions and talk about what they're seeing and experiencing. Understanding more about vaping can also help families have informed conversations about nicotine and lung health.

Throughout the back-to-school season, Lung Saskatchewan's What's In Their Backpack? campaign will share practical information and resources to help families prepare for the September Asthma Spike, support children with asthma at school and beyond, and learn more about youth vaping and its impact on lung health.
