Join Lung Saskatchewan's mission for healthier lungs in our province

Allow me to share a remarkable story with you.

Born in 1942, Mervin Schneider was raised with ten siblings in Revenue, Saskatchewan. Mervin’s parents took time out of their busy lives to volunteer in their community. Their example of hard work and dedication to family and community made a big impact on Mervin, who says, “volunteer work and charitable giving are my way of life.” At 82 years old, Mervin remains incredibly active in his community, volunteering daily with Meals on Wheels. He also supports over 100 charities, including Lung Saskatchewan, where he is a monthly donor. Mervin attributes his ability to donate to the sound financial advice he received early in life. These investments enable him to donate regularly and also commit to legacy gifts.

Monthly donors, like Mervin, play a crucial role in ensuring Lung Saskatchewan’s mission continues to thrive. Their contributions provide stable, predictable funding that empowers us to plan and execute long-term initiatives confidently. This invaluable support ensures access to essential resources, education, and assistance for people with lung disease to live healthier, fulfilling lives.

In 2023, thanks to the generous support of our donors, we were able to:

  • Empower our Youth4Change program to advocate successfully for changes in the Tobacco and Vapour Products Control Act, including raising the minimum age to 19 and strengthening advertising regulations to protect youth in Saskatchewan.
  • Provide financial assistance through the Caring Breaths Financial Assistance program to individuals in 23 communities across Saskatchewan. Recipients include those living with or caring for someone with lung disease, as well as individuals working to complete radon mitigation.
  • Contribute over $200,000 to Saskatchewan-led research with our partner, the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation.
  • Offer continuing education opportunities, including RESPTREC, Lung Saskatchewan’s training agency for health professionals seeking advanced training in diseases such as asthma, COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis.
  • Expand our radon test kit options to include continuous radon monitors in addition to our long-term test, as well as supporting the library lending program in three Saskatchewan communities. If you have not tested your home yet visit HomeRadonTest.ca.
  • Grow membership in our eight online support groups (asthma, lung cancer, COPD, lung transplant, sleep apnea, COVID-19, pulmonary fibrosis, and smoking cessation) that provide a safe forum for people to come together to support one another on their lung health journey.
  • Offer our third ‘Saskatchewan Quit Smoking Challenge’ to support people from across Saskatchewan on their quit journey. Over 600 people have joined the group for support on their quit journey.

Today, I’m inviting you to join Mervin as a monthly donor and play a vital role in supporting Lung Saskatchewan’s mission. Your consistent monthly support is crucial for us to continue improving lung health and providing essential resources to those in need. Your donation, whether a one-time or monthly, will not only make a significant impact today but will also contribute to the continued success of Lung Saskatchewan in the years to come.

Thank you for considering this request and for your dedication to the well-being of our community.
