(Pictured: Roger and Joan Egger) Meet Joan Egger. Joan recently celebrated her 80th birthday with friends and family, however, this particular birthday she chose to do something different. Joan asked her guests to donate to The Lung Association, Saskatchewan rather than purchasing gifts. Thanks to Joan’s championing efforts, $410 was raised for lung health initiatives in Saskatchewan. A sincere and lung felt THANK-YOU for Joan. Why did you choose to collect donations for The Lung Association rather than gifts/cards? A friend of mine from Blaine, Washington, sent a birthday request for herself indicating that she would rather receive contributions to her favorite cause. This got me thinking. Why would anyone who is 80 years old need or want anything. In fact, I am trying to get rid of stuff. So after the fact that I had made the invitations, I found that I could add on to them. That's when I added: In lieu of gifts/cards, please consider giving instead to the Lung Association, Saskatchewan. I personally decided that instead of buying a new outfit for my birthday party, I asked the guests to come wearing ultra-casual, jeans, t-shirt and for kicks to wear their favorite hat. I then wrote a cheque for the approximate amount which I would have spent on a new outfit and gave it to The Lung Association. Was there any feedback from your friends and family about the donation request? The feedback I got was all positive. I was surprised, however, nearly everyone gave a card, and some of them had included a cheque. Many thought it was a wonderful idea! I hope the idea grows in all directions. How has The Lung Association, Saskatchewan helped you? The Lung Association so far has given me a place I can go to for my particular health issues. Everyone there has been so hospitable and friendly. When I was first diagnosed with interstitial lung disease (ILD), I was devastated! I thought I was handed a death sentence. Of course, I went immediately to the internet, specifically to the Mayo Clinic site to search all I could find about Lung Diseases. I went into denial, almost immediately. But kept searching and finding that I needed someone I could identify with...the mood swings, the extreme fatigue, the coughing, etc. The most important news I joyfully received was the news that Dr. Veronica Marcoux is coming to Saskatoon, and is specializing in ILD. I cannot wait to meet with her. It is so very nice to know that there are people out there that CARE, because when you have a disease like this, you feel terribly alone and vulnerable, as I am sure anyone diagnosed with a life threatening disease must feel. We are not alone. |
