Across the country Canadians give their most significant gift of the year during this winter month. For many Canadians philanthropy is a part of our culture.

Canadians have a reputation of donating their time, energy, money and skills to causes that matter. Canadians provide the crucial support to over 161,000 charities and nonprofits in Canada. These organization in turn enrich our society by supporting communities and improving quality of life. 

The latest statistics Canada report about Canadian giving shows that 84% of Canadian aged 15 and over (23.8 million!) donate to charitable and nonprofit organizations. On average Canadians donate a $446 gift per year which amounts to $10.6 billion donated by Canadians annually.

85% of Canadians main motivation to give is compassion for those in need followed by personally believing in a cause and wanting to help while contribution to our communities.

The Lung Association has benefitted from the generosity of Canadians for over a century. Our Christmas Seals Campaign started over a century ago when seals were used to fund previously unheard-of healthcare education and help stamp out tuberculosis.

Since 1908, Canadians have made a difference in the lives of people with lung disease by supporting the Christmas Seal Campaign.  When a humble postmaster in Copenhagen, Denmark came up with the idea to sell decorative stamps to make money for the crusade against tuberculosis (TB), little did he realize that a little paper stamp would help save lives and impact lung disease around the world and for generations to come.  Today Christmas Seals are an essential fundraiser for The Lung Association nationwide.
