On March 6th, an Ontario court approved a historic $32.5 billion Big Tobacco settlement to address the harms caused by the tobacco industry. While Saskatchewan will be receiving a one-time settlement payment of $712 million, Lung Saskatchewan is working with partners in advocating to both provincial and federal governments to use these funds to put a strategy in place to support cessation, lung cancer screening, and prevention efforts. Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in Canada, killing 46,000 Canadians annually. We urge the provincial government to prioritize lung health in the settlement.
