In October, many of us are fortunate enough to pause and consider the many people, places and initiatives we are grateful for. This is especially true for us at the Lung Association of Saskatchewan as we celebrate the achievements of two of our very own health care providers and leaders - Dr. Brian Graham and Jill Hubick, RN, CRE. Please join us in congratulating these exceptional individuals.

This month is jam-packed with exciting events and campaign launches. Our Breathe and Win Raffle is rolling and you can win the grand prize of $40,000 cash, a Saskatchewan Shindig with your choice of a live musical performance, trips and other amazing prize packages. Those who purchase a ticket can also enter our 50/50 draw, which is already over $25,000!

Speaking of winning, Tackle Radon is back for Season 3 and it’s bigger than ever! We have expanded into Alberta, growing our campaign to three prairie provinces and four professional football ambassadors. Which team will you be cheering for?

As we approach November and Lung Month, we continue to offer a multitude of educational opportunities for people across Saskatchewan. Whether you are a person living with, or a caregiver for, someone with a lung disease, there is something for you. Tackle Radon - The Expansion Draft

Did you know that radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the prairie provinces are a hot spot? You can't see, smell or taste radon so the only way to know how much is in your home, is to test for it! In Seasons 1 and 2 we committed to tackling radon in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Now, we are excited to announce that the Tackle Radon program is expanding into Alberta for Season 3!

In addition to Adam Bighill and Andrew Greene, we have two new football players on the roster, Calvin McCarty from Calgary and Trevor Harris from Edmonton, joining forces to bring awareness to radon and encourage families to test their homes.

Congratulations Dr. Brian Graham and Jill Hubick!

Dr. Brian Graham, winner of the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lifetime Achievement award is for distinguished and devoted service of 15 or more years to The Lung Association, and whose personal activities and/or leadership and devotion to the mission of the organization are considered exemplary.

During Dr. Graham's 4-decade career with The Lung Association of Saskatchewan, he led the charge in several brand changes. Dr. Graham was responsible for programs that provided opportunities for many physician specialists in respiratory care to train and stay in Saskatchewan to provide service and led numerous lung health related advocacy efforts with government on many levels.

Jill Hubick, winner of the 2021 Alan J. McFarlane Staff Award

The Alan J. McFarlane staff award honors a Lung Association employee for contributing unique and outstanding service to the Association as recognized by their peers.

Jill uses her creativity by working with patients and community members to share their breathe stories to the public. These breathe stories are a medium for public education, awareness and are also a way to invoke positive change. Jill inspires volunteers, co-workers and partners with her passion of health, wellness and lung health!

The Power of Breathing

Breathing is among the most effective antidotes to stress and a key component to wellbeing. By learning how to breathe properly, we can lead a better life and boost our health by learning simple breathing techniques.

Through this webinar with respiratory therapist Donna Turner, we will explore how we can become efficient breathers. When in doubt, breathe out!

Ask The Experts: Is It Your Time To Quit?

Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 7 PM (CST)

Quitting smoking is the best thing an individual can do to reduce their chances of developing lung disease or to manage existing lung disease.

This panel discussion will provide expertise with backgrounds in tobacco education, lung health, addictions counselling, and lived experience.
